Maritime transport represents the biggest share in international transportation. Its main advantages are low cost and high capacity.
Water transportation has numerous advantages over land transportation, including the availability of natural routes, and the possibility to simultaneously transport heavy cargo and passengers.
However, transportation by water is leading to the pollution of waterways with oil products and other toxic substances discharged by the ships’ engines, or as a result of accidents or disasters. The waste generated by passengers also contributes to water pollution.
In Ukraine, waterways are mainly used for cargo transportation. Passenger transportation is dominant in the Black Sea ports, while 90 percent of all river transportation takes place on the Dnipro.
