The main role of air traffic is to transport passengers over distances of more than 1,000 kilometres. Freight is also carried by air, although the share is comparatively small.
Air transport has both advantages (high speeds, the possibility to deliver goods to isolated areas by helicopter) and disadvantages (high cost, dependence on weather, infrastructure requirements, limited carrying capacity). These disadvantages limit the use of aeroplanes for freight transportation.
Significant concerns are also frequently raised about the negative environmental impacts of air transportation. Read the factsheet to find out more about how the global community is trying to improve the situation.
