There are some important considerations to bear in mind when installing an outside toilet:
- Use a waterproof lining to prevent raw sewage from entering the groundwater (bearing in mind the soil characteristics).
- The minimum permitted distance between a toilet and a water source is 25 metres.
- Don’t dig a cesspit where the groundwater level is high (i.e. less than 2 or 3 metres).
- Take the prevailing wind patterns into account so as to protect yourself and your neighbours from unpleasant smells.
There are several innovative solutions on the market, including peat toilets, chemical toilets and bio-toilets.
