Pencils and paper

Use, reuse, recycle

Wood is used to produce textbooks, exercise books and many other school supplies. This takes a toll on forests. The reduction in forested area has a negative impact on the Earth's climate, which in turn leads to a reduction in the number of plant, animal and insect species, and their potential extinction. It also causes soil erosion, floods and the depletion of groundwater supplies.

You can help to save trees and protect forests by:

  • reusing paper as often as possible, borrowing books from the library, writing on both sides of the paper, and reusing cardboard boxes and other paper products so as to reduce the need to produce new paper; and
  • buying a new pencil only when your old one has been used up completely.
